Mosteiro de Sao Bento, Rio de Janeiro: 8 reviews and 13 photos

Just a glimpse of this church's main altar can fill you with awe. Layer upon layer of curvaceous wood carvings coated in gold create a sense of movement. Spiral columns whirl upward to capitals topped by cherubs so chubby and angels so purposeful they seem almost animated. Built between 1617 and 1641 on Morro de Sao Bento, one of the four hills that once marked colonial Rio, the monastery is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Brazil, and offers a fine view over downtown Rio.

Open: Daily from 8-11am and 2-6pm.

Address: Rua Dom Gerardo 32
Directions: North end of Centro.
