"Santa Maria Della Salute Church" Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute Tip by mvtouring

  Santa Maria Della Salute
by mvtouring

This church was built after a terrible plaque caused thousands to perish, and the town fathers made a pact with God that should it stop they will built this church. Needless to say the plaque was overcome and the church was erected in honor of the Virgin. Work began in 1631 and it was consecrated in 1687. The church has an octagonal plan and is surmounted by a great dome and a smaller dome directly over the choir.
