The Akershus Slott and Festning is located in a strategic position on the east side of the pier. In 1299 when Hakon V Magnusson became king, Oslo became the capital of Norway and he decided to build the Alershus Fortress to protect the town from the outside attacks. After several sieges and fires, and after to have fought the Northern War between the 1563 and 1570, the castle was restored and it was added with the Munk gun in 1559. In 1624 Oslo was destroyed by a great fire and King Christian IV rebuilt the town and he gave the name of Christiania (only in 1925 the town took the name of Oslo). In that time the castle became a Reinassance Palace and a new fortress with ramparts (Akershus Festning) was started around the castle.
