Abisko, guarded over by the well known silhouette of the Lappland Gate valley, is one of the northernmost national parks in Europe and famous for being where the Kungsleden highland trail starts (or ends) and you can ski along parts of it in winter, or hike the lot in summer. I have only been here in mid-winter but by then it is famous for its northern lights because of its position. Close to the Norwegian border mountains, the westerly rains affect those rather than Abisko where the sky is instead often clear - a requirement for seeing the lights. Here you can also ski down mount Nuolja in season, as well as go on Norwegian whale safaris or skate on Lake Torne. In summer, Abisko is instead known for its canyon and unique flora much praised by Attenborough, with rare orchids in the intense bloom only found in the Arctic with its short season. Then you can also experience the Midnight sun from the top of Mount Nuolja (mid June). One of Sweden's most famous fell stations offer accommodation and ski rental but there are also other services in the village of Abisko itself and in nearby Björkliden. All have their own train stations along the famous iron ore railway, and are easy to reach from Stockholm, Kiruna and Narvik.
