My first day in Rome was spent in the Northeast part where you can walk round the narrow streets around Piazza di Spagna which is one of the exclusive areas in Rome. The square is home to the famous Spanish Steps which were built in the 1720s to link the square with the French church of Trinita dei Monti above. Other attractions in northeastern Rome include the famous Trevi Fountain which was completed in 1762, the huge basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Museo Nazionale Romano which features most of the antiquities found in Rome since 1870, the basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli and the mausoleum of Augustus.
