Early on the morning of June 4, 1928 while it was still dark, the Batavia struck Morning Reef in the Houfman Abrolhos off the WA coast. Urgent attempts were made to get people and provisions off the vessel before it broke up. More than 250 people were transported to nearby islands but little food or water were saved.
