"The White Cathedral" Tuomiokirkko (The Lutheran Cathedral) Tip by Marpessa

In 2002 Tuomiokirkko celebrated its 200th anniversary. This is a beautiful white Cathedral, possibly the most photographed building in Helsinki. The inside of the Cathedral seems large and spacious due to its high ceiling and white walls. To be honest, on the inside, it is not the most interesting of churches as it holds few artworks. However there is a large organ that looks magnificent. On the rooftop you can find statues of Christ and the twelve Apostles.

Everyday at 17:49 the Cathedrals melodious bell rings. Although I am unsure why this is...

My favourite part about visiting Tuomiokirkko was sitting on the steps leading up to the building and enjoying sitting in the summer sun and looking out across Senate Square (and also eating a white magnum ice-cream - very decadent - but I was on holidays, so why not treat myself? :D ).

Tuomirkirkko is on top of a hill and can be viewed from most south-eastern parts of the city centre. The Cathedral looks particularly beautiful when it is lit up at night.
