This has to be one of the hidden gems in the world that few often see. The city of Baalbek or Heliopolis as it was once called dates back to the first century AD. It containes the tallest Roamn columns in the world. The Temple of Jupiter is said to be the largest temple ever built. Considering that I have never been to Greece...standing at the foot of the Temple of Bacchus was truely awsome for me. You have to see it to believe it!
The site itself sits in the middle of the city. You can take one of the many tours from Beirut or catch a local bus or cab to get there. The trip to the city is a bit of a kick since this is where Hizbollah rules and you are reminded of that by the numerous billboards along the side of the road. It's far from dangerous but it can be an eye opener for some. You just need to remember that the city and the people do a decent business off the tourism trade. It is a place few may forget.
