Santa Maria da Provenzano church was built on the site where used to be the house of Provenzano Salvani, the captain of the Sienese people on the side of Ghibellines. The front side of the Provenzano's house was decorated with the sculpture of the Pieta, but the Spanish soldiers commited an sacrilege and the sculpture was smashed to pieces, with the exception of the bust pf the Madonna, which remained perfectly intact.
The locals proclaimed this a miracle and in 1594 they commissioned Flaminio del Turco to design and built the church. Del Turco designed this beautiful church in the mannerist style. The high altar has a niche containing the image of the Madonna.
Address: Piazza Provenzano
