"De Hef - an industrial monument" Top 5 Page for this destination Bridges Tip by Airpunk
Bridges, Rotterdam: 36 reviews and 62 photos
This bridge, completed in 1927, was the main trian bridge of Rotterdam until 1997. That was the year when a new tunnel was finished, removing almost all railroad infrastructure from the city center. The bridge is left as an industrial monument in upright position. The larger, northern part of the bridge is completely removed, but you can still see some remains of it, such as the fundaments in the Nieuwe Maas. At the side showing to the city center, you can walk on a small grass area where long time ago were railway tracks. The name “De Hef” means the lift and only refers to the part which could be lifted to that the big ships could pass by. Today, it is the nickname for the whole bridge.
Take a look at the second picture. There, you will see a large photo by Otto Snoek showing the old bridge. Have also a look at my tip “Maquette Oude Maasbruggen” for more bridge impressions.
