Edinburgh Castle stands on a volcanic hill, some 80metres above the city. There has been a fortification atop the hill since recorded time.
The first stone castle dates from the 11th Century. The castle as seen today, dates from around that time, with frequent modifications. It is therefore a mix of all different types of styles.
