OK, ask anybody to name a significant date in English history, and the chances are they'll come up with 1066 when Duc William of Normandy, subsequently known as the Conqueror, invaded England, defeated the Saxons who were there, and effectively changed the course of British history forever. The great battle which ensured his victory and where King Harald was slain is known as the Battle of Hastings (as any schoolboy will tell you).
Now it gets interesting. The Battle of Hastings wasn't fought at Hastings at all, it was fought at a place called Senlac. After the Battle, the place was re-named Battle (seems sensible, I suppose).
The site of the battle and the Abbey can be visited (adults £5:30), and the tour really is done very well. At the beginning there is a small exhibition and short video presentation. You are given an audio "wand" and you walk around listening to the commentary at set points, although you can wander wherever you like. The commentary is given from the viewpoint of a norman knight, a Saxon warrior and there is also a female perspective. You really can get a vivid idea of what it must have been like. the pictures give an indication of some of the things you will see as you journey round this historic site. Recommended.
