Nicosia is still Europe's last divided capital city - despite recent attempts to change things. Right through the heart of it runs the Green Line, seperating the northern (Turkish Cypriot) and southern (Greek Cypriot) halves of the island. The line was created in 1974 following the Turkish invasion of the island. You can cross the Green Line on foot at the Ledra Palace checkpoint - you'll need your passport of course and will need a visa, which in reality is quite effortless and free to obtain. It's quite a fascinating walk if you arm yourself with a map and wander along the route of the line - streets come to a dead stop, sometimes at checkpoints, sometimes at guarded posts, other times at simple rolls of barbed wire and warning signs. Aside from the streets which peter out you can get a feel for a life which is disappearing fast nowadays - metal and wood workshops, repair shops. little arched buildings in which artisans still create their treasures.
