La Donna Italian Cuisine - Closed, Chicago: 1 reviews and 2 photos
In July of 2005, my neighbor, Sue [Suedog] and daughter Jill [jillzi], and I met in Andersonville at La Donna Italian Cuisine to celebrate my birthday. Sue and I had just seen the terrific musical "Wicked" before meeting Jill and Sabrina Dee about 5:30 pm.
Even though the tables are closely spaced, you don't feel crowded, & even though the restaurant has a family-style atmosphere, the food is quite sophisticated and authentic Italian fare. I was told that La Donna did a major remodeling in 2003 and now has two floors for dining. It is clean, cozy, intimate yet bright.
They offer early bird dinner specials from 4:00-6:30 pm that includes soup or salad; the Featured Dinner for Two includes a bottle of Italian House Wine. This authentic Italian spot offers a brunch menu along with lunch and dinner menues.
The dinner menu [which we used] includes appetizers, salads, pastas, risotto [rice dishes], entrees, and desserts. In addition, they have an extensive wine list.
La Donna is famous for its generously portioned dishes, northern Italian pasta, grilled calamari, and the pumpkin ravioli in balsamic cream sauce. It is also known for paella, bruschetta, decadent desserts, and dessert wines.
Favorite Dish: Sue enjoyed the Linguini allo Scoglio made up of fresh clams, mussels, bay scallops, shrimp, tomato, oil, garlic, and marinara sauce for $18.95. Jill loved her Ravioli di Carciofi, which is Artichoke-filled ravioli tossed with shrimp and artichoke heart in a saffron cream sauce for $17.95. But, I think the best of the best was my order of Ravioli di Basilico [ basil pasta stuffed with fresh mozzarella in light red sauce with oregano and sun-dried tomato] for $16.95. Jill tasted it and agreed that it was splendid.
After opening my present of a new digital camera and an EasyShare printer dock, Jill and Sabrina Dee left. Sue and I stayed to enjoy a shared dessert of Tiramisu [ladyfinger biscuits dipped in espresso & coffee liqueur, topped with mascarpone cheese and whipped cream] for $5.25.
We also enjoyed coffee and Cappuccino with our dessert. All-in-all, La Donna, with its "passionate Italian chef who uses only the finest and freshest ingredients" is a wonderful place to celebrate a birthday!
