"Best Advantage Point To See It All" Empire State Building Tip by Chris_Louise

Empire State Building, New York City: 373 reviews and 609 photos

We decided to go up at night and we were glad we did for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it looked incredible at night. Lights as far as the eye could see. I guess the downside is that you cant see as much of the city life but the sight of the lights was incredible.

Secondly, for the next 2 days it was closed due to the fog cover. If we didnt take the chance to go up when we did we might not of got the chance. If you are staying for a short time in NYC take the first opportunity you get to go up. A lot of other things you can do without the chance of weather spoiling it.

Lastly, the line up was long but not as long as a few days later once it reopened. It took us about 2 hours as it was to get up there when we did. It would have taken longer that day. The line up for entry goes right outside and usually around the corner. It moves fairly quickly but getting to the door is just the start of the wait. Its something you need to be willing to wait for as its a major attraction. There is a bar on the corner. A really nice bar with restaurant food and service. If you had a group going up you could take it in turns having a drink while someone else lines up.

Be prepared to empty your pockets, take off jackets and go through detectors like at an airport. Security is high and you will need patience.
