The Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's most important monastary. It was bulit in the 10th century by the monk Ivan Rilski, who later was declared a saint.
During Bythantine and Turkish occupation the monastary was still the most important religious centre but it slowly declined. But in the 19th century it a bulidind boom started and the monastery got back its old glory.
The main church is decorated with colourful murals and is the last resting place of the remains of Ivan Rilski and Boris III, Bulgaria's last tsar.
The monastery's museum displays religious objects, coins, weapons, jewelry and embroidery.

Directions: In the Rila Mountains, about 120km South of Sofia.
