Chemnitz's oldest building is also the last remaining part of the city wall. Roter Turm (Red Tower), named after the reddish colour that porphyry gives it, was built in the 12th century and used as a prison for a few centuries. Today, it serves as a museum (which, however, never seems to be open...). You can follow a small line on the ground to see where the actual city wall used to be.
I'm sorry for the bad picture, but the tower is surrounded by so many ugly buildings that a better picture is hard to take!
