When you travel in Poland it's hardly possible not to come across a castle - sometimes magnificent and impressive, sometimes reduced to ruins. All of them witnessed important events and still conceal a lot of secrets, all of them are surrounded by legends. You cannot be indifferent to their appeal, whether they are huge complexes, like Malbork or just picturesque ruins like the ones in Jura Krakowsko-Czestochowska. There are over 500 castles all over Poland, built mainly between 12th and 17th centuries. In southern Poland they were usually erected on inaccessible rocks or hills, taking advantage of natural defence properties of the place. In lowlands they were often built on islands or surrounded by moats. With time most of them were abandoned or expanded and rebuilt into palaces. Many of those which survived the 20th century wars were restored, but there are still numerous castles waiting for investors.
Undoubtedly, the most impressive castles, especially regarding the size, are the ones erected by the Teutonic Knights. The best example is Malbork, but let me mention also Gniew or Kwidzyn. Naturally, other castles scattered all over Poland are also worth a visit.
