Northe-East Loch Lomond - The road is down there

Looking at the map you will see that you can only go along the east side of the Loch by road. (On the west the road only goes for a few miles). And while there have been massive improvements on the road to Tarbet (going north) and the first few miles from Crianlarich (going south) there is a stretch in the middle which may be the poorest main road south of the Highlands proper.

Until a few weeks ago I had never been along this stretch. And when I decided to try it, night was falling. Well, a lot of the road is much darker than it would be as trees form a canopy over it. And it has a lot of twists and turns. The road surface is also in an appalling condition, especially at the edges where it has frequently disintegrated, and kind of grabs at your tyres, trying to pull you off the road into walls. And it can be hard to position yourself to avoid this as it is can be busy road and at points barely wide enough for two cars (never mind the trucks and buses that may use it).

In an email VTer Sorhus (who travelled all round north Scotland in a big motorhome) picked this stretch out as the one which was like driving back home in Norway.
