"The Champs Elysées" Champs-Élysées Tip by Pieter11
Champs-Élysées, Paris: 164 reviews and 271 photos
The Champs Elysées is definitely one of the most famous streets in the world. It has a length of 1880 metres and is 71 metres wide, leading from the Place de la Concorde towards the Place de l´Étoile. The name of the street comes from the Greek Mythology. There was a story telling about Elysean Fields, where the blessed lives. The parc of which the Champs-Elysées was made out, used to carry this name.
TheRond Point des Champs-Elysées devides the avenue into two totally different pieces. The eastern part, towards the Place de la Concorde, is a peaceful parc, with kiosks, flower-beds and places to relax.
The other side is totally different. This is the area of big companies, shoppingmalls, expensive restaurants, fast-food restaurants and tourism agencies.
The Champs-Elysées has always been an area for huge events. Memorial Marches to celebrate the Liberation of the second World War, the place where Hitler himself showed the German power during the war, but also the place where the biggest cycling event in the world finishes every year: the Tour de France, and recently the place where thousands of French people did their best to get the Olympic Games of 2010 to their city.
Directions: Line 1, all stops between Charles de Gaulle-Etoile and Concorde.
