  Canals in Venice

Our tour did not stay in Venice. We stayed in a motel and rode in our bus to the parking area to catch the vaporetti (water bus) into Venice early in the morning, docking near St. Mark's Square. We had a local guide named Rita who showed us about. Venice is actually made up of 118 islands. Actually there used to be more islands but some waterways have been filled in to make walkways. Everytime you cross a bridge you are on a different island, each with a church. We saw the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Cathedral and Square, The Tower, The Bridge of Sighs connecting Doges Palace to the prison and of course, the Gondolas. We also visited a glass blowing factory, and just wandered around absorbing the special feel of Venice.
