  Urquhart Castle
by Ben-UK

Dating back to the 13th century, Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness is a popular tourist destination -- of course many of the tourists are visiting Loch Ness for another reason, but a visit to the castle provides a nice break from monster hunting ...

The castle has been in various hands in its long history but its last action was seen in 1689 when a small garrison supporting the Protestant Monarchy of William and Mary held out against a large Jacobite force. The garrison later left, blowing up much of the castle as they went -- evidence of this can still be seen around the gatehouse.

The castle is now largely a ruin but it's setting on Loch Ness amidst magnificent scenery makes it well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Opening Hours: The castle is open all year as follows:-
April to September: 09.30 to 18.30 every day.
October to March: 09.30 to 16.30 every day.

There is an entrance fee to the castle and visitor centre

Directions: On the A82, on the banks of Loch Ness, near the village of Drumnadrochit.
