In the Perthshire highlands, near Lochs Tummel and Rannoch, the old Victorian town of Pitlochry is an ideal base for walkers. It's a busy town and in high season accommodation can be at a premium.

Apart from the scenery, Pitlochry is known for its hydro-electric dam and salmon ladder -- rather than jump, the salmon swim through interconnecting pipes -- there's an observation place for visitors to watch the fish underwater.

There's very good walking in the area with nearby Loch Faskally and surrounding woodland, you can walk to Killiekrankie or hike up Ben Vrackie, lots of choice.

The below weblink gives detailed information about the town.

Directions: On the A9, north of Perth.
