  Sirmione on Lake Garda
by no1birdlady

We took a boat tour on Lake Garda in two open boats. Our guide Lino went in the other boat and our boat had a very cute Italian guide. First we went under the castle Rocca Scaligera built in the 13th cen. when the Scaligera family ruled Garda, then out into the main lake where we saw the house where Maria Callas came to spend leisure time. (It's in the photo shown here.) We also saw ruins of the villa of an ancient Roman poet complete with a spa which sat out on the end of a point of land. Going around the point we could see tall cliffs of dolomite limestone. We also saw bubbles coming up in one area where there is a hot spring down under the lake. There were some interesting birds out on the lake including Mallards, Red-crested Pochards, Mute Swans, Coots, Great-crested Grebes, and Barn Swallows. Later wandering around the village, we bought a bowl of local fruit. They also have lemon drinks made from the huge local lemons.
