Heather in bloom on the battlefield of Culloden
by Ben-UK

Here in April 1746 an army of clansmen led by the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie was heavily defeated by the Government army of George 11led by the Duke of Cumberland -- it marked the end of the Jacobite rebellion, an attempt to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne of Britain.

Today the site has a visitor centre with an exhibition of Jacobite weapons and artefacts for which there is an entrance fee -- the battlefield itself is free to walk around -- flags and signs mark the position of the various regiments/clans.

The battlefield is open all year during the day.
The visitor centre is open all year except 24 December to 20 January.
Opening hours 09.00 to 18.00 from April to October and 10.00 to 16.00 November to March.

For a detailed account of the battle, please see the website below.

Directions: Take the A9 south from Inverness and the Culloden battlefield is signposted after about 5 miles.
