"Take off your shoes!" Jan Mayen Local Custom Tip by tini58de

It is a habit throughout the Arctic to take off your shoes once you enter a home. This has a good reason, too - especially here on Jan Mayen:
the surface is so sandy that you have loads of sand, mud, lava particles or little stones gathered under the soles of your shoes - and you would make such a mess inside the house if you did not take the shoes off.
Here at the station of Jan Mayen there was both a water bucket to rinse the shoes as well as a broom/shoe brush to clean the worst of the dirt before entering the house. There you took off your shoes and proceeded on!
