Dusk Birding at Rondo Retreat in the rain forest
by no1birdlady

You don't think of finding a tropical rain forest in Kenya but this is a remnant of what once was a very large area of rain forest stretching all the way to Zaire. But now this area is one of the few preserved parts of it. The area around Kakamega is one of Kenya's most densely populated so there are pressures to cut the forest for agricultural land and fire wood. 75% of all of Kenya's butterflies are found in this forest. We saw a lot of butterflies while here. Many of them were at mud holes along the road and trails and a few were on dung in the clay road. We were staying at Rondo Retreat in the rain forest and began early because that is when the birds are most active. We hiked trails and birded along the dirt roads. At dusk we were back at Rondo Retreat looking for birds that come out at dusk such as the Lady Ross' Touraco. We missed that one. Our guide heard it but it never flew in where we could see it. By the end of the day, we had seen 101 different species of birds, many of them life birds because this habitat is different from other places we birded in Kenya.
