This National Park is around another soda lake in the Rift Valley. If you saw the movie OUT OF AFRICA, this is the lake they showed with all of the flamingos on it. There were apx. 700,000 here when we were here. This was a great place for wildlife as well as birds. We saw up close looks at Wart Hogs. They are really so ugly and have big tusks. We also saw Cape Buffalo and there were small birds called oxpeckers on the buffalo's back picing off the ticks. Rothchild's Giraffes were in the trees including l pregnant female. This species of giraffe has white socks. And 2 White Rhinos. At one time there were only 20 left in the wild but they have been saved so far. He is not white. He was named a Dutch word meaning "wide" and it was mistaken for the word "white". It has a wide jaw good for grazing. African Spoonbills were out in the lake. They are beautiful white birds with red spoon like bill that they use to sift through the mud for food. Other good birds seen were: African Fish Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, and Yellow-throated Longclaw. We ate lunch up at Baboon Cliff. Our guide had to run a baboon out of the picnic shelter when we arrived. There was a Rock Hyrax here on the rocks. This was the only time on the trip that we saw this species.
