Christchurch's Gondola sits on top of Mt Cavendish, to the southeast of the city. On a clear days it offers fantastic views over Christchurch, Lyttelton Harbour, the Canterbury Plains and inland towards the Southern Alps. We decided to take a trip up at sunset on our first evening in NZ. We got up there about an hour before dark, which gave us time to do a short walk around the top of the area, and allowed us to take in the stunning views. Although the cafe was shutting as we arrived there's also a restaurant, should you wish to eat while enjoying the sunset. It's a bit pricey there though, so we didn't bother with this. There's also a little museum - the Heritage Time Tunnel, which describes the history of the area, from how it was formed to the arrival of the Maoris and later the Europeans. We found this really interesting and thought it was very well presented. Return tickets cost $18 for adults and $8 for children aged 5-15 and the Gondola runs daily from 10am - 9pm.
