There's a huge array of island and beach experiences in north Queensland. Here's just a snapshot. Hinchinbrook Island with its fragile heath, mountains, mangroves, diverse flora, 22 butterfly species and can be accessed from Townsville while Magnetic Island, an affordable tropical getaway, is only 20 minutes from the city.

Don't miss the beauty of Orpheus, Dunk and Bedarra Islands. Mission Beach is a well loved north Queensland site. From Cairns, access Fitzroy Island with its native orchids and fringing reef and coral, Green Island, a small forested coral cay or Lizard Island north of Cairns. The Cod Hole on the Great Barrier Reef is renowned as a superb dive site.

Palm Cove and Port Douglas, north of Cairns give you the chance to relax on palm fringed beaches whilst the tropical paradise of Cape Tribulation offers a true exotic experience. Thursday Island at the tip of Cape York was a former defence centre and is now known for pearling and crayfish industries and a gateway to the culture of the Torres Strait Islanders.
