The church to the Baptist was erected(1208-23) during the burst of building activity in the early 13C in Matera (It was at the height of Frederick II's reign and contemporary with other churches in Matera and the Castel del Monte). It is much redone in Gothic style(1697), and this facade is pseudo-Romanesque hiding this original style behind it (with a little rose window) J.B. himself stands in the central niche. Under the tallest arch of the arcade is an original doorway with carved surrounds and columns and carved "heads" stringing across the lintel. Around the side is another door (that you enter through). It and a belfry are an interesting look as is the inside of the church. We have included these views in a Matera Church Travelog.
Directions: Up via S. Biagio from Piazza V. Veneto
