Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, Porto
by antistar

Although not easily visitable, this former convent makes an impressive sight from the main banks of the river Douro. It is where Nelson planned his surprise attack on Napoleon in 1809, and to this day remains a military barracks. This makes viewing it up close problematic to say the least. The round church, however, is open to the public on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings.

Directions: Far side of the Dom Luis I bridge.
