Covered Sheds, Praca da Ribeira, Porto
by antistar

Porto has some great architecture covering a great span of history. The medieval period was harsh on Porto, as with the entire country, with the constant battles with the Moors. It's not surprising, then, to find much of the remaining architecture from this period being sturdy and functional, designed with survivability in mind. From the fortress like Cathedral to the double ring of walls, the work seems mostly defensive in nature.

The picture here shows the covered sheds down by the Praca da Ribeira on the river front, just underneath the Dom Luis I bridge. It is now topped by the wrought iron balconied buildings so typical of Porto.
