For our 42nd wedding anniversary, Allan and I ate at Ruth's Chris Steak House in Chicago. Even though this is a chain across the USA, it is a great restaurant, especially for tender steaks. It's an interesting story how this chain got its start. In 1965, Ruth Fertel mortgaged her home to buy a small steak house in New Orleans named Chris Steak House. After she made a success of it, she added her name; thus, it became Ruth's Chris Steak House!
It's a contemporary-looking place inside with dark walls and lots of art work. They have black leather booths but mostly tables for four.
Our waiter [Oswald] was especially excellent. The menu includes Appetizers and soups, salads, steak entrees, lamb, veal, and pork chops, shrimp dishes, lobster, chicken, and many fish dishes. Since everything is alcarte, they have many side orders of different kinds of potatoes and vegetables. They offer about ten different desserts as well.
Favorite Dish: Allan and I shared the Italian Salad which included iceberg, romaine, and raddichio lettuces tossed with chopped green olives, onion, clery and topped with artichoke hearts, Greek olives, carrot curls, egg [and we said no anchovies]. It was then sprinkled with romano cheese and had a light Italian dressing. We agreed that it was really special.
Allan ordered a New York Strip that was USDA Prime cut. He thought it was very good but did not compare to the one at Foxfire.
We also shared a huge order of shoestring potatoes that were extra thin and crispy.
I had the Petite Filet that was the tenderest cut of corn-fed Midwestern beef.
They put butter on top of the steaks, and the plates are quite hot when they serve them.
Allan had to take home 1/2 his steak; I ate all of mine but a few bites. Of course, we had to take home more than have of the shoestring potatoes.
Because it was our anniversary, the waiter brought us a large piece of chocolate Mousse Cheesecake with chocolate cookie crust. The plate had "Happy Anniversary [mispelled] made of chocolate. It was a kind gesture. We had a marvelous dinner and anniversary.
