Favorite thing:

In the 16th century the habit of smoking tobacco was introduced into Japan by Portuguese traders. Smoking was prohibited in 1603 but the law was ignored.

Since then smoking is still relatively popular
If you are a sensitive person concerning smoke, you may have a hard time in some situations in Japan.

Non-smoking areas are not very common in restaurants and public areas, not even in fast food or family restaurants, eventhough non smoking area are increasing..

All trains have non-smoking cars.

The law prohibits the smoking of cigarettes to persons under the age of 20. BUT cigarettes can be bought in tobacco stores and at vending machines.
