The actual building as its stands now only dates back to 2001. It was reconstructed as a celebration of Riga's 800th anniversary. Originally the first building stood on the same spot in 1334. It was owned by the Great Guild,. The Blackheads began to own the building from 1713. These members were actually rich, unmarried German men who had come to Riga as merchants.

The building was partially destroyed in 1941 and then under Russian occupation, it was totally dismantled. The tourist information occupies part of the building and it is possible to visit the other part of the building for a cost of 1.5Ls.
The patron of the building is St Mauriitius.

Address: Ratslaukums 7, Riga
Directions: Head to Ratslaukums from the river. It's just past the Museum of The Occupation, the huge black building!
