by trisanna

Luang Prabang is full of beautiful wats or temples and that is why it earned the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most beautiful as one of the most important wats in the city.

This small temple complex was built around 1560 by Lao King Setthathirat and remained apart of the royal family until the Communist revolution in 1975. The temple is not just important due to its royal status, but for its beautiful and classic Luang Prabang architecture. Some of the architectural highlights of Wat Xieng Thong are:
-the low sweeping roofs that almost touch the ground
-the beautiful glass mosiacs, especially the tree of life design that is on the back of the Sim
-various gold stencils that decorate the interior of the temple

There are a few stupas and other buildings in the complex. One thing you should not miss is the funerary carriage house.

Address: Tip of the penninsula where the Mekong and Khan ri
Directions: There is a small admission price of around US sixty cents. Usually there is someone sitting by a large umbrella, who collects the money.
