Ely Cathedral is an imposing cathedral. You can see it before you come into the town of Ely thrust up into the sky. It was begun in 1083 and took 268 years to complete. In the early days, it was a monastery but Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1539 but it continued to exist as a cathedral. There is an unbelievably beautiful ceiling with a "lantern" window dome. The High Altar and East Window were gorgeous. I really liked the stained glass even though it is from the 19th century so isn't old. As a special treat as we toured the inside, the choir of Kings School were practicing. They are age 10-13 and have wonderful young voices that echoed through the huge cathedral. They are the choir for Ely Cathedral.
