According to the Bible, on this day Gabriel brought the news to Mary. However, this day is also the closest to the Spring Equinox, and has fused many of the pagan & Christian rituals.

The lore says that on this day the cuckoo announces the approach of the summer; the bear wakes up from winter sleep, the snakes and lizards come out of their holes, and the samodivi (magic women rulers of the fields, forests and meadows) come back to their realms. Young unmarried women and girls are not allowed early out to avoid the samodivi (who might take away one's beauty and cause illness and death). One shouldn't touch needles (so no knitting, sewing, etc.) to avoid snake bites. The women also ritually circle the house, making noise with a pan, to scare away all the snakes, lizards, frogs, fleas, etc. After the spring cleaning, the rubbish & dust are burnt to cleanse from illnesses.
