Just across the Fresno-alley from "the house" restaurant in North Beach is a really cool building, the Saloon.
An old historic original that survived all earthquakes & fires, it was supposedly in the old barbary coast days a nasty little place with prostitutes upstairs, while downstairs the bartenders were handing out Mickey Finns to naive customers before they were shanghaied.
It's now a funky and fun bar with good live bands. Local band bluesbars like this are becoming scarce. I always like this place. It is fun to stop in for music & beers, and something about it always makes me (and lots of other people) want to take a picture of it.
Here's the building in daytime and a closeup around 10:30 at night when a good local blues band was playing.
Dress Code: Wear your dirty jeans, a worn leather jacket
Small dance floor, and some of the bands are imho really pretty good, with excellent names like Johnny Nitro and the Doorslammers.
Address: 1232 Grant
Directions: Half a street "up" upper Grant street from Columbus avenue in North Beach, between Columbus and Vallejo, just around the corner from Cafe Trieste. (what a great neighborhood...)
Theme: Live Music
