"The infamous hotel oloffson" Hotel Oloffson Tip by rising_sun

Hotel Oloffson, Port-au-Prince: 125 reviews and 3 photos

I stayed here for a few days while we prepared for our journey south. It has a sort of crumbling elegance to it, and the fact that it's set back a bit from the noise and the filth of p-au-p's streets is a big plus. There are large, lush trees and plants shading the sizable two-story verandah, where drinks are served in the evening and the owner richard will probably come out to talk to everyone. There are all sorts of crazy characters and ex-pats hanging about. The pool looked as if it had fallen into disrepair when I last visited. Rates are sort of reasonable- but you feel safe there. Rooms have private showers and fans. The food is servicable, which is a good thing since venturing out after dark gets increasingly scary as the situation deteriorates. I'd recommend this over the ridiculous hotel montana, an over-the-top ostentatious palace whose granduer is rendered all the more obscene by the scenes of starvation, dead pigs/dogs, and burning garbage unfolding below it on the hillside.

Unique Qualities: The owner is quite a character. Come on thursday night to see him perform with his excellent band Ram.
