The church was built between 1824 - 1826, and is a cruciform church designed in a neo classical style by C L Engel - built from massive logs. The current seating capacity is 1200 worshippers.
In 1854, the current altarpiece replaced a gold cross which was also designed by Engel. The church organ is from 1867.
The surrounding park is also a graveyard, although it was last in active use in 1829, with a few internments during the war period 1918-1919. The cholera victims of 1710 were buried there, and is sometimes known as Cholera Park!
The gate to the park was another Engel design, and was erected in 1828. The Old Church is the oldest remaining church in helsinki and is a very popular place to hold a wedding.
