Dinner in the main dining room

Everything you've heard about eating on cruise ships is absolutely true. You can pig out until you can't eat any more and then you can keep on eating.

There were two main dining options on the ms Statendam -- the more formal dining room or the less formal buffet on the Lido deck. We opted for the dining room. Advance reservations are required - we made ours when we booked our cruise. With reservations, you get the same time, same table every night. We lucked out. Our table was next to the window, so we had fabulous views every night.

Favorite Dish: The food was surprisingly good, and we never had a bad meal. This was indeed surprising, considering how many people needed to be fed. We were expecting hotel - banquet hall quality, but the food was much better than that, closer to that served by a 5 star restaurant. You could choose from appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, and entrees. Then came dessert. You could order every single course if you wanted. And of course I could rarely say no. This is why I felt compelled to spend an hour running on the treadmill every morning.

The food is all included in your booking charge - but the wine is not. One bottle of wine every night - the tab started to balloon.
