  Agios Nikolas
by janetanne

Whenever I visit the islands, I try to visit the largest and most famous monastery of the area. There is always at least one 'main' monastery on every Greek island. This monastery is most often dedicated to the 'patron saint' of that island. Not coincidentally, a majority of the local residents will be named after that patron saint. So, if you just take notice of the local first names, you will usually be able to determine what the local saint is called. On Spetsis, that patron saint is Agios Anaigiros. The monastery of Agios Anaigiros is on the back side (South) of Spetsis.
This monastery seen above the old port, in the adjecent photo, is however, Agios Nikolas, and dedicated to the the patron saint of all sailors and the sea; which is why this monastery is located next to the port!

Address: Above the Old Port
Directions: Walk along the wall toward the old port, then take any of the perpendicular roads leading up toward the monastery.
