This is especially for students like me, who grew up on The Sound of Music and want to see all the sights, but don't have 4 hours or 45 euro to spend on those memories. There are 2 ways to get around this. Neither are foolproof, but if you're a poor backpacker, they just might be worth the effort. If not, take the 45 euro tour.
1. We had friends who simply walked into a tourist office and asked the woman to point out on a map the different S of M sights. Then they took cabs around Salzburg and found the sets themselves. This worked for them, but it did take a lot of time.
2. My group planned on taking the long tour, but the bus left 20 minutes early and we didn't make it. We decided to pay 18 euro for an hour's tour of Salzburg, and then begged our wonderful tour guide to concentrate on the S of M. We ended up getting a great mix of both, and loving our quickie tour. I can't make any promises that your own tour guide will be as accomadating as ours, but we did hav ea great tour, so it might be worth the adventure.

Directions: The tour we had was arranged through Salzburg Sightseeing Tours, which covers Sound of Music, Mozart, Berchtesgaden and Eisriesenwelt tours.
