Shell of Bombed Cathedral at Coventry
by no1birdlady

In the large city of Coventry, there is this shell of a beautiful cathedral. The west tower and spire were built from 1374 to 1450. It is now just called the Old Cathedral because a new modern cathedral has been built beside it. We visited it very early on a foggy morning which added to the eerie feel of the place. It was bombed in the 9 hour Blitz of 1940 and was left as it is to remind us of the effects of war. At the front altar is the world famous "Charred Cross". On the morning after the Blitz, Jock Forbes took 2 charred oak beams and made a cross and stood it up in a bucket of sand. This and the "Father Forgive" sign on the front wall remind us of the futility of war.
