The tuk tuks are open sided

If you should venture out to slightly more remote locations, you should be wary of bandits. Apparently they will target tourists who are away from the main areas.

We were also warned about the thieves and pickpockets. Even when you are driving along in a tuk tuk ensure all your personal items, including cameras are out of reach through the sides. Young boys run up and snatch your things. Be careful to tuck bag straps down so they can not be grabbed.

Bags should be carried tucked under your arm so they can't be snatched or hands dipped into. If you're carrying a camera, wrap the strap around your hand. Take care with your mobile phones too.

At times you will find yourself surrounded by beggars or touts which became a bit intimidating for me a couple of times. One time was by the river where there were few other people around. One of the guys came up alongside me, but more from the back, just in my peripheral vision and I quickly moved away. I definitely felt threatened.
