The pecan tree, which is similar to the hickory and walnut family, was growing wild in the United States long before any European settlers arrived here. Because the nut doesn't grow naturally in any other part of the world, the United States lays exclusive claim to it. On the pie itself, there are a number of theories to its origin. Of the many favourite American dishes inspired by the pecan, it doesn't get better than pecan pie with its rich, dark, custard-like filling and heavily encrusted, crunchy pecan topping. Exactly where the pie originated is a mystery, but some suggest the wife of a Karo Corn Syrup executive may have developed the pie more than 70 years ago in an effort to create recipes to help sell the product. Others believe the pecan pie originated in the backwoods of Georgia or Alabama where even the poorest of families had the pie's basic ingredients of corn syrup and pecans in their pantries. Like with everything else, chefs at fancy restaurants who like to call themselves creative have done their best to create the ultimate pecan pie with the additions like chocolate, molasses, bourbon, sweet potato, cinnamon apples, vanilla, maple syrup, and even a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. I say, keep it simple. Other pecan favourites that come from the South include pralines, sticky buns, candied pecans, fruitcake, pecan tarts, sweet potatoes or grits with pecans, pecan stuffing for meat dishes, and butter pecan ice cream.
