Monroe's: "Open Late (St Kilda)" Top 5 Page for this destination Monarch Cakes Tip by leffe3

Monarch Cakes, Melbourne: 2 reviews and 1 photos

You know the score - its early in the week, its 10pm and all the kitchens in the vicinity have closed except for the fast food joints or prepared food places that serve food on polystyrene plates with plastic knives and forks. If you're in the St Kilda area, you can go somewhat better!

Monroe's is not necessarily a place I would overly recommend. Its big, its too brightly lit, it verges on impersonal and poor decor and carpets. But it does have an open fire, which is one good thing, but most important thing is that it stays open late - and considering I've tried many of the options in the area late, this has to be one of the best on offer!!

Favorite Dish: The list is long and everything you would want whether at 6pm or 1030pm is there. So there's pizzas, pastas, risottos as well as fish and chips, steaks, chicken parmigiana, roo and whole host of others.

The food isn't bad, its just not very subtle. And the mains, whilst enormous (except the pizzas) are pretty hefty - AUD$25-30 for mains. You're paying for quantatity rather than quality - but hey, sometimes all you want to do is hoe down a large plate of pasta (or, in my case, what turned out to be an enormous lasgane and salad).

Fine dining is ain't, bargain prices it ain't, but with so few late night options of anywhere near decent, its worth remembering Monroe's if you're in the area.
