"Siena's Museo Civico and Palazzo Pubblico" Italy Things to Do Tip by Paul2001

The Palazzo Pubblico and its 95m high tower, the Torre del Mangia dominates the skyline of Siena, especially as you wander the Campo. The building still houses the town council of Siena as it has for 500 years. It is also the home of the Museo Civico. This probably the most important museum in the town. Do not be put off once you begin to explore the museum, the first rooms are not memorable and simply feature 19th century artwork. It is the collection of very fine Sienese Renaissance art. Here there are stunning works by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Simone Martini among others.
A visit to Palazzo Pubblico should also include a climb up the Torre del Mangia. This tower was named after it's first watchman who apparently was both a glutton and portly. Persumably he expired after climbing up the steep steps to the top. The views of Siena and the countryside from the top are worth the effort.
A visit to both the tower and the Museo Civico cost 9 Euros. The Palazzo Pubblico is open daily from 10am to 7pm most of the year.
